How It Works

Sign up online in about ten minutes, then stop by once to verify your IDs and pick up your keys.

  1. Pick a box size and term

Choose a Small, Medium, or Large box and a 3-, 6-, or 12-month term. Add options like package receiving or mail notifications if you want them.

  2. Enter your details

Your name, home address, phone, and email. Renting for a business? Add the business name and address, plus the names of anyone else who will receive mail at the box.

  3. Upload two IDs and fill out PS Form 1583 online

USPS requires one photo ID and one address ID (see what to bring). You complete Form 1583, the USPS mailbox application, right in the portal. It checks that neither ID is expired and prepares a printable copy for your signature.

  4. E-sign the rental agreement

Read the terms, check the box, and type your name. A signed copy is kept with your application.

  5. Pay online or reserve and pay at the counter

Pay by card through our secure checkout, or reserve your box now and pay when you come in.

  6. Verify your IDs and pick up your keys

USPS rules require us to check your two IDs and witness your Form 1583 signature before any mail can be delivered: in store at key pickup, on a live video call with our staff, or before an online notary. Once that is done and your registration is filed with USPS, we activate the box and email you your new address.

What to Bring

USPS requires two current, unexpired IDs from everyone who will receive mail at the box: one photo ID and one that confirms your home address.

1. Photo ID (one of these)

  • U.S. state/territory/tribal driver's license
  • U.S. state/territory/tribal nondriver's ID card
  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • Foreign passport
  • Uniformed Service ID
  • U.S. Access card (PIV/CAC)
  • U.S. permanent resident card (USCIS)
  • U.S. certificate of citizenship
  • U.S. certificate of naturalization
  • Tribal identification card
  • Matricula Consular (Mexico)
  • U.S. university ID card
  • NEXUS card (Canada)

2. Address ID (one of these)

  • Current lease
  • Mortgage or deed of trust
  • Voter registration card
  • Vehicle registration card
  • Home insurance policy
  • Vehicle insurance policy
  • Driver's/nondriver's state ID card (only if it is not your photo ID)

One document can't count twice. A driver's license or state ID card can serve as your photo ID or your address ID, but not both.

Not accepted: Social Security cards, credit or debit cards, and birth certificates. Utility bills and bank statements are not on the USPS list either.

The home address on your form must be a physical address, not a P.O. Box. You can upload photos or scans of your IDs during online signup, or bring them in and we will scan them at the counter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What will my mailing address be?

Our street address plus your box number, written like this:

Your Name
3313 W South Airport Rd # 204
Traverse City, MI 49684

USPS requires the “#” (or “PMB”) designation for private mailboxes and does not allow “Suite” or “Apt.” Your box number is assigned when your box is activated.

Can I use the mailbox for my business?

Yes. Choose “Business” during signup and enter the business name, type of business, business address and phone, and any registration details. Mail addressed to the business and to the people you list is received at your box.

Can other people receive mail at my box?

Yes, but USPS requires every adult who receives mail at the box, spouses included, to complete their own Form 1583 and present their own two IDs. List them in your application, then have each of them download the additional boxholder form, fill it out, and bring it in with their IDs to sign in front of our staff. Minors are simply listed on the parent or guardian's application; they need no form or ID.

Do you accept packages?

Every box receives USPS mail and packages. To have UPS, FedEx, DHL, and Amazon deliveries accepted and held for you, add package receiving to your rental (see pricing). We sign for deliveries and keep them safe until you pick them up.

Can I finish everything online?

Signup, your IDs, Form 1583, the agreement, and payment are all online. USPS still requires that your IDs be verified and your Form 1583 signature witnessed, which can happen in store when you pick up your keys, on a live video call with our staff, or before an online notary. No mail can be delivered to your box until that step is complete.

What happens when my rental ends or lapses?

We email renewal reminders 30, 14, 7, and 1 days before your end date, and you can renew online or at the counter. After your end date there is a 10-day grace period, and renewals paid after the end date carry a $10 late fee. If the box is still unpaid after the grace period, the rental ends and we record the termination date with USPS.

When a box closes for any reason, your key deposit is refunded once all keys are returned. USPS does not forward mail from a private mailbox, so let your senders know your new address. For 6 months after closure we transfer mail that still arrives for you to the transfer address you gave on Form 1583, with new postage and a handling fee, unless you declined that on the form.

Your Information

How we store, share, and delete what you give us when you rent a mailbox.

Encrypted at rest

Everything that identifies you — name, addresses, phone, email, ID details, your Form 1583 answers, and your e-signature — is encrypted before it is stored, and every file you upload (ID images and signed forms) is encrypted before it is written to disk. Your uploads are visible only to store staff. Card payments are handled by Stripe; we never see or store your full card number.

Shared only as USPS requires

USPS regulations require us to keep your witnessed Form 1583 and copies of your two IDs on file and to enter them in the USPS Customer Registration Database. A copy of your application also goes to our in-store mailbox system. We use your contact details only to run your rental: receipts, renewal reminders, and mail notifications if you add them.

How long we keep it

  • You start an application but never rent (abandoned mid-signup, or cancelled without paying): everything is deleted 7 days later.
  • You reserve a box to pay at the counter but never pay: everything is deleted after 30 days.
  • Your rental ends (box closed, or a paid application cancelled or refunded): your electronic records, including ID images, are deleted 30 days later. Payment records (amounts and dates, with no personal details) are kept for our books.
  • Active boxes are never purged while you rent.

What USPS requires us to keep longer

USPS rules (DMM 508.1.8.4) require us to keep your signed paper Form 1583 for at least 6 months after your rental ends, and to transfer mail that arrives for you to the transfer address on that form for those 6 months, unless you declined transfer in writing on the form. The paper form stays in the store file for that period and is then shredded.
